Erin 🕯 @er1n

hey yall recommend me headphones
• i don't wanna spend more than $150 or so. i'm willing to go that much because i want something which will last, but i'm not gonna drop like $400 on some bs pair.
• i listen to a _lot_ of music of diverse genres.
• i also produce music.
• i'd strongly prefer over-the-ear.

@er1n Used AD900 maybe? Is open fine, or no?

@mhu2141ai hmmmph i'd prefer not having open ones as i tend to use headphones to block out noise in public spaces when i'm working

@er1n Yeah, that seems to be the case.

I've never seen/heard closed-backs I liked and just go with IEMs if I want isolation, but I assume that's a non-option. If it wasn't I'd say try to find a deal on used ER4P (preferably from when they had user-removable cables? or the new iteration which still do)

It does suck how hard it is to find something where all of the extra $ above 60-80 goes to build

@er1n Err, seems to be the case for most people who want headphone recommendations

@er1n i swear by AKG K 240 MK II.

you want the $135 ones, not the cheaper, lower quality $65 K240STUDIO.

they're just really good.

@pixelpaperyarn @er1n ill vouch for anything akg produces (and not just cuz im from austria)

@er1n i haven't bought very many brands, but audio technicas are good w/ sound quality. also, they're pretty bass light

i've got the ath-m40x and whatever my earbuds were again

@er1n oh, and don't get the ones without replaceable cords. you might not like the stock coil

@er1n (and it's easier to replace if it breaks, but that's only happened with the thin earbud cable for me)

@er1n unfortunately, the really good stuff costs around that much

although it's mostly just materials used: screws instead of glue, metal instead of plastic. lasting a decade or two instead of a couple years

@er1n if for some reason you may go up to 180$ i can recommend some DT880 which sound amazing and have lasted better than any i've had before

@er1n i use ath-m50x's and they're pretty good. i've considered (and actually used, for a while) more expensive headphones but their main advantage is tons of people have them and if you make music there's a fair chance that's how it'll actually sound to your listeners. fairly nice balance between "useful" and "sound good without making stuff sound unnatural in the pursuit of 'good'" and "cheap"

@jk @er1n these ones are definitely built better than the m40x's i have. i would've gotten them if these weren't cheaper

@xenon @er1n my dad has two pairs of m40x's and i can second this, the m50x's sound quality is also noticeably better from my experience, although in his case the m40x is fine since they're only being used for tracking rather than mixing or mastering

@jk @er1n m50x's are excellent. i also just got my pair of the massdrop/sennheiser hd6xx's (basically hd650s but for $300 less) and those are fantastic. m50x is a huuuuuge bang for your buck
