still curious if the slice of english-speaking masto and its periodic normal ones that i see are actually the entirety of english-speaking masto or if there are entire other clusters of users that i haven't ever seen nor interacted with. entire communities on here

like... how large even is fedi now? i used to have a mental model but that was 3 years ago when the software and people were vastly different

@oat how tf... like... i don't really have any good ways to get outside my current cluster b/c single user instance

@er1n i keep following people because they look neat and then they boost someone else i think looks neat etc etc

@oat huh, most of the people on my tl boost other people i already follow lol

@oat @er1n same kinda

though for today it was "oh a kiwisdr backdoor, yikes" -> "oh the person who discovered it looks cool" -> "oh she even has a masto acct!"

@er1n @sys64738 @oat this is my process for finding clusters in fedi; find someone cool on fedi -> bio -> Twitter -> shared follows with fedi handles in the Twitter bio. I’m not proud of it as a technique

@er1n @oat but yeah the only reason im not following/interacting w/ cool people on twitter is, i do Not want to deal with twitter

which is kinda sad bc theres a whole lot cool people id like to talk to etc., but yeah, twitter

(though some are also on random irc channels but those are project-focussed so its harder to talk abt random stuff there .-.)

@sys64738 @oat the funny thing is that i've been using twitter more recently and it's not really that bad? like, the UI/UX aren't that much worse than masto, weirdly, and timelines being jumpy and stuff are even worse on masto sometimes

@er1n @oat mmh thats not the thing that worries me the most, its more the:
* giving data to a random corp
* i barely have to deal with Bad people on here, mostly thanks to hellsite moderation/defeds. meanwhile terfs etc. on twitter seem to be quite loud? idk
* it also feels a bit more disocverable by, relatives etc, which is also something id like to avoid

@sys64738 @oat yea 1. is def the biggest for me, but my stuff can get slurped by ppl on masto anyway – AP federation isn't particularly private. at least it's mostly weird fedisearch and NLP researchers and not megacorps, but idk if that's really better

2. is not as big a thing for me since i'm extremely proactive with blocks and also have a pretty high tolerance for seeing stuff passively before blocking

3. people can doxx either for me, so oops

@er1n I dunno how to describe it. There's more tankies than there used to be. A lot of people went back to Twitter. The circle of people I'd even want to interact with doesn't feel quite as big nowadays.

But at least I've got a core of good people.

@er1n there have got to be enormous clusters

i know i'm not seeing:
- people who've blocked me
- instances that defederated with x0r because of something i said
- instances that defederated w/x0r because of someone we federate with
- instances we defederated from because they federated with altrighters or instances that tolerated them
- instances that our server is failing to communicate with for whatever other reason
